With greater maturity come greater challenges, and the three friends learn it takes courage to seize happiness, especially in a place as magical and dangerous as the Crescent City. About the Author Jack Caldwell is an author, amateur historian, professional economic developer, playwright, and like many Cajuns, a darn good cook. Born and raised in the Bayou County of Louisiana, Jack and his wife, Barbara, are Hurricane Katrina victims who now make the Suncoast of Florida their home. Jack is the author of four Jane Austen-themed books. PEMBERLEY RANCH is a retelling of Pride & Prejudice set in Reconstruction Texas. THE THREE COLONELS: JANE AUSTEN’S FIGHTING MEN is a sequel to Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility. MR. DARCY CAME TO DINNER and THE COMPANION OF HIS FUTURE LIFE are Pride & Prejudice-flavored farces. In 2015, he released a series of historical novels about New Orleans, titled THE CRESCENT CITY SERIES. THE PLAINS OF CHALMETTE begins the series, commemorating the Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans. He marks the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with three modern novels: BOURBON STREET NIGHTS, ELYSIAN DREAMS, and RUIN AND RENEWAL. When not writing or traveling with Barbara, Jack attempts to play golf. A devout convert to Roman Catholicism, Jack is married with three grown sons. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love stories form the first volume continue, tension builds up towards Hurricane Katrina's attack By noagnes It's difficult to review the middle volume of a 3-volume series (for those who haven't read Bourbon Street Nights, the first volume, do it now - I highly recommend it!). The story of the previously introduced heroines and their love interests continues, and by the end of this volume Elizabeth and Marianne find healing from the past in a happy and committed, gradually deepening relationship. Emma and George's story explores the difficulties that living with an invalid father (true to Jane Austen's setup at the end of her novel Emma) realistically means and the contrast between having a demanding job of a heart surgeon and his wife staying home can cause in a marriage. The villains from Book 1 also continue as they began, Wickham the drug-dealing sociopath and Waguespack the weak opportunist drug consumer continue to wreak havoc in the life of our protagonists. Through the daily life of the characters a we experience details of everyday life in New Orleans, with lots of culinary descriptions and music. Meanwhile, through brief descriptions of tropical storm formation, monitoring and forecast, and damages by storms prior to 2005, the tension builds up towards what we know will happen: the arrival of the monster named Katrina. This dramatic event, however, is reserved for Volume 3, apparently - along with the villains getting their due punishments and our dear couples' final settling down, after, hopefully, they all survive the impending catastrophe. The many threads of the story, the number of primary and secondary heroines/heroes that the book follows make the progress of this book perhaps somewhat disjointed, but Jane Austen fans will like the adaptation of her characters into modern day New Orleans and will enjoy discovering cameo characters that are tributes to her work. I admit that this story made me long to someday discover New Orleans even though I live on another continent. For those who are interested in this piece of info, this book contains a lot more sexual scenes, not very graphic but explicit, than Book 1. The criminal elements also feature some violence, but these are only a few scenes.I look forward to read Volume 3!

I thoroughly enjoyed his story of Will and Lizzy. We know they are supposed to be together, and I really appreciated the storylines that get them there. I like that he is giving us history of his beloved city as he was writing this story. I really want to go back to New Orleans and visit it as a native. Another hit, Jack Caldwell.

A love letter of a different sort By Tart Jane Austen's characters wrote some of the greatest love letters in all of literature and Jack Caldwell has written a love letter to New Orleans and to Jane's characters with this terrific saga. I am so glad it has been published and I don't know how I will manage the month until Volume 3 is released.
