Neither Jessica Stout nor her father, Walter Horak, set out to publish this book, both authors wishing foremost and forevermore that there had never been a reason. Yet love for a little boy compelled them. FEEL ME BRAVE began as a blog by Jessica to keep her family and friends abreast of her young son's struggle with an incurable disease. But the power of her prose-unflinchingly honest, piercingly insightful, and on occasion startlingly humorous-settled deeply into the hearts of people following Ryland Stout's journey. Caught up in the same struggle, Walter began to write poetry as he groped for a way to express a grief that tormented his entire family, even as each day brought them closer to that inevitable moment of parting. Over time, the idea took hold to merge the words of father and daughter into unique, shared testimony. And readers urged that it find a wide audience, especially those facing serious life challenges or simply contemplating its difficult mysteries. The result is this remarkable book, a "treasure" in Dr. Ira Byock's estimation. Heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measure, FEEL ME BRAVE invites you to open your own heart and to dwell a while within those deep places that make us all more fully human.

Unconditional love and resiliance in the midst of tragedy make this a can't-put-down read By M.Boericke The moving journal entries, heartfelt poems and striking artwork make Feel Me Brave a book you will be unable to put down. Here, in beautifully wrought poetry and prose, is the heartbreaking story of one family’s journey coming to grips with the ultimate nightmare. Even those who are not parents will find they are better off for having faced and read this tale: for although the content is unthinkably sad, the reader will find herself transported by the grace, the resilience and the sheer power of unconditional love conveyed so perfectly throughout the book.

Rare Melding of Talents By Kathleen DeJardin This book is a rare melding of talents: Jessica Stout, for her ability to strip down the elements of sorrow and create beautifully poignant prose, and Walter Horak, her father, for his ability to bare his soul and convey a universe of emotion in the carefully selected words of his poetry. Will you be able to put it down? Possibly. The emotions and insights are so very vivid and true that you may need some time to process all that you are feeling. But you will finish the book. And its impact will never leave you.

By Sarah As they bear witness to the excruciating experience of caring for a dying child, Jessica and her father honor the joy-filled, brave heart of Ryland. Their words and artwork glow with the purest love. So many anecdotes, descriptions, poems, and images throughout the collection cut to the bone because they must, it seems, in order to bare for readers the core of courage. Anyone who has lost a loved one, who faces imminent loss, or who fears such loss needs to read these journal entries and poems which, together with the stunning drawings, will take your breath away but give you the inspiration to live more fully and joyfully. Jessica's prose is probing and graceful as she lays bare her deepest suffering, shares acute observations, and searches for connections and solace in the natural world. Walter's poems and drawings-- themselves simply stunning in their emotional testament of a grandfather's love--seem to be engaged in a tender dance with the journal entries, and the love of father for daughter echoes and supports the undying love of mother for son. I cannot say enough, or perhaps say the right things, about this collection, but it has changed my life and very likely will alter yours.
