Any child will know when she’s loved unconditionally. And every child should be entitled to a nurturing environment and love—but this is not what always happens. In 1943, Anna Townsend, at the age of six weeks, is adopted by a couple who is unable to have children of their own. With her pretty red curls, the little infant has no way of knowing she’s been adopted for the wrong reasons: Vera wants the status that “being a mother” will bring her among family, neighbors, and friends. Her husband, Alf, is enchanted with the pretty little child. However, his fatherly affection will prove the undoing of their father/daughter relationship because Vera is unwilling to share love or attention with the little girl they have named Glenda. Follow Glenda Taylor’s account of struggle for survival in a story of societal expectations that is also a case study in parenting. After enduring nineteen years of bullying, she leaves home to begin a new life. Building on skills from school, she hones her secretarial talents working for a major tobacco company in England. Her resiliency blossoms, and she accepts a position abroad for two years before immigrating to the United States, where she works for a prestigious legal firm in San Francisco. In her mid-forties, she finds her niche as a compliance officer in northern Arizona, investigating civil rights complaints in employment and public accommodation and establishing a mediation program. In 1994, she relocates to southern Arizona and finishes her career working in human resources. She currently lives in Tucson, Arizona. Her life story—at times poignant, sometimes uplifting examples of the human spirit and others heartbreaking accounts of pain and loss—are woven into a compelling story of triumph and survival.

This is no ‘fluff novel.’ It portrays a real life story of what happens with neglected children who are raised by a single parent or parents who are themselves neglected or abused. The writing is strong stuff that can stir up old memories. I think this book will resonate with many readers who, like the main character, “survived and thrived.”The book is testimony to the many lonely, abused women who experienced the double whammy of a culture that ignores at the least, and is misogynous at the most, toward women. Mothers suffered and passed on the poisonous pedagogy. Fathers passively allowed it to happen. It took grit, determination and those "angels" sent to the main character’s life to help her move beyond the negative messages and gaps of her childhood. This particular journey seemed all the more lonely with the added component of being ancestrally rudderless. An adopted child who has no knowledge of her background. I felt sorry for that little girl who only wanted what everyone wants–to be listened to, loved, and accepted. "Survive and thrive" is the hope of this book. Stay with it to see an accomplished, feisty, funny, strong woman emerge into owning her “self.” Brava, Glenda Taylor!Ethel Lee-Miller Tucson AZ

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and to go on to create a happy and productive life By Caryn Wood As a friend of Glenda’s who knows her to be kind, confident, and self-assured, this memoir illustrates that many times we don’t know the adversity, hardships or the journey taken by others. It is a tribute to Glenda that she was able to remove herself from the cruelty, find the strength to not be permanently affected by negativity, and to go on to create a happy and productive life. I hope this book becomes a resource recommended by social workers and counselors, as it provides strong inspiration to young women who find themselves in similar bullying situations. Kudos to Glenda Taylor.

By Georgia Brousseau This writer quickly captures interest in the book through her excellent choices of phrasing, descriptions, and events. Yet, it was not a quick read. Had to keep putting it down because of the emotional reactions to the events. Although not purely chronological in structure, this memoir builds a clear portrait of a time, WWWII, the societal pressures on a woman and a girl, and the working world of a young single career woman by choice. Taylor is effective in describing the emotional conflicts of trying to have a loving relationship with a mother who knows not how to love a child.
