Selected as an ALA Top Ten Graphic Novel of 2016 Samantha and George are a couple heading towards a sabbatical year in the quaint Mexican town of Oaxaca. For Samantha, it is the opportunity to revisit her past. For George, it is an unsettling step into the unknown. For both of them, it will be a collision course with political and personal events that will alter their paths and the town of Oaxaca forever.   In tandem, the remarkable and arduous journey that a Monarch butterfly endures on its annual migration from Canada to Mexico is woven into Ruins. This creates a parallel picture of the challenges of survival in our ever-changing world.  Ruins explores the shadows and light of Mexico through its past and present as encountered by an array of characters. The real and surreal intermingle to paint an unforgettable portrait of life south of the Rio Grande.

Ruins, by Peter Kuper

Review “With a monarch butterfly serving in the role of all-seeing observer flying poetically above it all, the constantly remarkable Peter Kuper details the travels and travails of a creative New York couple who move to Oaxaca to find inspiration and revitalize their lives. Kuper’s art is, page after page, astonishing.” (Jules Feiffer, Pulitzer prize-winning cartoonist)"Maybe you've never been to Oaxaca, Mexico before, or maybe you know it like the back of your hand - either way, Peter Kuper's beautiful, immersive graphic novel is the next best thing to being there. Gorgeous art, high stakes themes and a plot with a surprising twist combine to transform this pivotal moment in the lives of a culture, a country, a couple, and a butterfly into a timely and illuminating journey from North to South and back again" (John Vaillant, author of The Jaguar’s Children)"Ruins is a masterpiece of visual imagery and poignant storytelling. Kuper weaves an elegant tapestry of colorful human lives juxtaposed with the multi-generational monarch butterfly migrations. I recommend this extraordinary book to fellow travelers and everyone interested in the survival of the monarchs." (Stephen Buchmann, co-author of The Forgotten Pollinators)"Ruins is Peter Kuper's experiences living in Oaxaca, Mexico colliding with an abiding fascination with insects woven into an epic graphic novel. Kuper illustrates the remarkable ability of the Monarch butterfly to survive, beauty intact, in the face of astonishing hurdles and illuminates the equal perseverance of the Mexican people and their culture.” (Mark Moffett, author of Adventures Among Ants)“Kuper’s interplay between rich color palettes and stark monochrome pages bring to life both the lush landscapes and harsh daily realities of life in the country.” (Tech Times)“Richly illuminated by Kuper’s trademark light touch with relationships and steely political acumen, it’s a beautiful, epic roman à clef about the importance of seeking the new and questioning the old.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“As a work with strong visual narratives, Ruins is a valuable addition to any graphic fiction collection.” (Library Journal online (starred review))“Ruins is a book rich with beauty and important ideas, and it’s just a lovely book from cover to cover. . . . It’s a special work of comics art.” (Comics Bulletin)“Sumptuously printed and designed, Ruins is a luxury book.” (New York Observer)“His detailed and richly colored drawings of life in Oaxaca bring authenticity to the troubled relationship of Samantha and George.” (Shelf Awareness)“Touched with surrealism.” (Entertainment Weekly)

By pupating I had the great pleasure of helping fact-check the insect information in Peter Kuper's marvelous new graphic novel. Kuper is a master of the medium and I believe this to be his greatest work to date. The art is exquisite and transporting. The reader is guided via a monarch butterfly through the dramatic lives of a US couple exploring Oaxaca, Mexico. I found the story to be moving and timely. I highly recommend this beautiful work, and not just because the entomology is spot-on!

I'm normally not a fan of graphic novels, but this is a different animal. Maybe you know the amazing panchromatic art of Kuper in Spy vs. Spy from Mad magazine, or his other graphic novel set in Oaxaca. A feast for the eyes, Kuper's vibrant technicolor art leaps off the page. The most amazing thing about the novel is the artful way that Kuper interweaves the story of two migrations, a human one with novelist Samantha and her illustrator/entomologist George, and a four-winged tale. The story of monarch butterflies migrating across the USA on their way to their Oyamel forest wintering grounds in Michoacan. The couple leaves New York City for a sabbatical visit to Oaxaca, Mexico, ostensibly time for Samantha to chill out and write her book. George has just lost his illustrator's job and their relationship is a bit unsteady. They settle into their rental home and the adventures begin. Along the way are stops at Monte Alban, markets, a beach, Michoacan and many others. Their are even surprise observations on Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. As an entomologist, although a bee guy, I can identify with George and his passion. He's always looking out for passing insects and photographing them, so that you learn quite a bit about Mexican insects in the guise of reading the book. I laughed myself silly remembering the travail of Mexican customs officers and the Federales, shopping in open-air markets, city driving, and unfortunately-- knowing as little Spanish as George does. I won't give up other details or spoil the ending. Certainly, you won't be able to put this book down until you've read it from cover to cover and not just once. Each reading brings a smile as you discover new arthropods and nuances, little details that you missed the first time. Importantly, this book details the perilous journey of monarch butterflies as they wing their way across Canada and the USA on their way to Mexico. It lends its voice, along with other monarch biologists and conservationists, at a time when monarch population levels in Michoacan are at their very lowest since their censuses began. Congratulations, Peter!

Terrific, visually stunning, and socially astute read By Joyce Wonderful book to take to read for a Oaxaca trip (although carrying it would be a bit heavy). It's important to know about the teacher strike of 2006 that shut down the city. Two stories going on here--the flight of the monarch butterfly and what it "sees" during its migration, which is laced with social critique (no words though--pictures suffice), and then the dissolution of a marriage. Fascinating approach and story.
