By Rohana I so wish I had Jeanne Faulkner’s book when I was pregnant.I had six pregnancies and every one of those births was very different, some easy and some very difficult. With the information in Common Sense Pregnancy, I could have been much more confident, felt more in charge of my pregnancy (and BE more in charge!) and had safer births for my precious babies. I could have been saved a lot of pain, worry and wrong choices.I especially like Jeanne Faulkner’s style of writing which made me trust I was listening to a tell-it-like-it-is friend who has genuine knowledge. She writes like there is nothing to hide. I have no doubt about her knowledge and experience and dedication to really benefit women. This is not just my opinion. A mother of four children, Jeanne was a registered nurse for 30 years assisting in thousands of labors and births “from the most natural, low-intervention, and low-risk to most high-risk and medically complicated. ‘’The forward to the book explains, “Jeanne Faulkner’s articles have been published in many leading publications and has been the trusted resource for the “Every Mother Counts “ blog. Most of all, I believe this book is like having a trusted teacher/friend. I will certainly gift “Common Sense Pregnancy” to up and coming young mother’s in my family.

Very general and easy to understand. This book is not filled with everything under the sun that could go wrong during pregnancy. Our midwife recommend it to us. Was a more refreshing take on pregnancy.

A short but focused book on the process of giving birth By Samuel Graf My wife is 20 weeks and I wanted to educate myself about pregnancy so I waded into the local B&N to educate myself on the entire process. It is very frustrating, the entire pregnancy/motherhood/birth field is so heavy with ideology it hurts, most books assume that you one becomes completely irrational just because one is pregnant -- I think it is all a bit sexists pulp along the lines of women are from Venus and irrational and moody. They give you week by week ultrasounds explaining how you baby is growing this and that, sob stories with names, etc. but I really just wanted down to earth information about practical questions about the process. This book delivers on this. It is written from a perspective of a labour nurse who also happens to have multiple children of her own. Its focuses squarely on birth, a little bit before and a little bit after, but very little else. No cherry sizes fetuses progressing to bigger edibles. The basic premise is to try to let nature do its thing, but don't get stressed if it doesn't and just enjoy the fruits of advanced medicine. Everything should be done as naturally as possible, but not any more natural than that. There also some hilarious pieces, e.g. about one very unfortunate baby that got tangled in her mom's pubic hair during delivery... I also learned useful things: never let doctors induce you unless they can give you reasons why and that epidural, while great in general, does have some downsides worth considering (I was very much against a natural birth but this book made me reconsider some of my assumptions). Why not five stars then? The style is somewhat inconsistent and at times really overly chatty and informal, like a bit too much of totally kewl, you know what I mean kinda writing... It is also very short and misses some pieces that I get stressed out about (our two cats decided to start pooing in our garden precisely when we manage to reach 20 weeks after two miscarriages so toxoplasmosis is the talk of the town, but it is never mentioned in this book). But if you don't have too much time and just need some real information about just how much it is going to hurt -- buy this.
