4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beyond the folklore and into reality By Diana Jean As I neared the end, I found myself slowing down because I didn't want the book to end. This is a well researched and thought provoking book. It brings out dimensions of Lincoln's life and character that we missed in the folklore we grew up with. Through all the tragedy and struggles, Lincoln grew and persevered. Rail splitting and studying by the fireplace do not begin to tell the story. The heartbreak, abuse, losses and economic struggles formed the man he became. And through it all, there are glimpses of his humor and love of poetry and Shakespeare. As heart wrenching as some of it was, I found it difficult to put the book down.
