By Ebienic All too often adoptive parents aren't really sure about how to adopt, what adoption professionals are really looking for in adoptive parents, or how adoption has changed in the past 50 years or so. With a special emphasis on domestic infant adoption, Dewey is very candid about how adoption processes have changed over his 30+ year practice, what will knock you out of consideration entirely, and what will just greatly lengthen your wait. I like his more conversational style, and anecdotes sprinkled throughout that really helped illustrate how it all works. If you are considering adoption (any kind, but particularly infant adoption) this book is a must-read.

This book proved to be just what we were looking for -- easy to understand By S. james My husband and I have tentatively begun considering the possibility of adoption. We're not sure if this is the path for us and we were looking for a basic "how to" guide to give us a solid foundation.This book proved to be just what we were looking for -- easy to understand, the basics explained and letting us know what we could expect so we can make an informed decision. It is written by someone who knows what they are talking about.Definitely worth it. . .

This is a story about someone who suffered from drug addiction, recovering from alcohol abuse, being abused physically, emotionally and verbally, then carrying that into a marriage. The story also is about the abuses one goes through living with someone suffering from these issues. This person not only suffered the addictions and the abuse, but suffered for twenty five years with multiple sclerosis, which is a disease that can alter a person's personality, rob them of quality of life, adding that to the suffering from addiction and abuse. In telling this story I hoped to reach people that may be suffering an abuse they do not recognize as abuse; emotional and verbal abuse. So much emphasis it put on physical abuse that people sometimes are unaware that emotional and verbal abuse are just as damaging. The scars run deep though they are not physically visible. This is my story of how I finally escaped living under these conditions and I hope that it will give inspiration to others.

Figuring out what to do to help yourself is, at best, mind boggling. Ms.Silvestris did what she had to do to help herself first and all those around her, including her ex-husband. She did it with compassion and understanding. Internal happiness achieved with dignity.

Although it took me a while to finally finish it due to life getting in the way I found it interesting to experience someone living under those circumstances and difficult to put down when I had to. A wonderful and enlightening read.

Private investigator Veronica "Ronnie" Ingels teams up with Deputy Dawson Hughes to find a geeky radio broadcaster's missing wife and young daughter. He's on leave on a special assignment with Authorized Operations (AO), a clandestine, quasi-government agency operating out of a sea-side mansion in Hither Hills, NY. The only thing is, many powerful politicians, and government big-wigs claim Authorized Operations doesn't exist. Ronnie is furious at both Hughes and the broadcaster for waiting thirty-six hours to start the search. She knows the longer it takes, the less chance there is of finding the child alive. The problem is, radio talk-show host Ed Harper has been hoping-against-hope that his pot-smoking, model wife is on one of her esoteric experiences and has simply taken the child while she romps for a few days. He doesn't want to seriously consider the other, more hazardous possibility… that his radio broadcasts have angered some very dangerous people. The investigation takes Ronnie and Hughes from a manicured Connecticut estate, to interviews with an elitist A-List society crowd, and run-ins with cranky local police detectives. Then they plunge deep into the seamy, drug-riddled underbelly of the fashion world, with the specter of international terrorism hovering. All the while they know, the sooner a child is found, the better.

Excellent Thriller That Doesn't Disappoint By Donn Taylor Deputy Sheriff Dawson Hughes, former Army Ranger, has just returned from a special mission for the mysterious spymaster Janus Agard. But instead of relaxing at Agard's seaside mansion on Long Island, he is given a new mission. Talk show host Ed Barton explains that his erratic wife, Brianna, has disappeared and has taken their daughter, Jennifer, with her. The disappearance is not unusual, but taking the daughter is. But there is also a possible Islamic connection. Barton's station received hate mail after a substitute for him condemned Islamic practices. And Brianna had flirted with two Middle Eastern men at a party. Barton saw them just before Brianna disappeared. So Dawson Hughes receives the mission of working with a private investigations agency to look for the daughter.The private investigator assigned is Veronica "Ronnie" Ingels, whom Hughes has worked with before. Their cooperation with the local police follows routine, but produces no immediate results. Then Brianna and the sometime male friend with whom she shares marijuana are found dead after being tortured. Evidence leads both to drug trafficking and to an Arabian prince currently living in the U.S. The prince's henchman, Hakim, is openly vicious, but it is uncertain if he is involved with the murder or the daughter's disappearance.From these complications and as Hughes and Ronnie come under threats to their lives, the author constructs a narrative of increasing tension that builds to an exciting climax and satisfying denouement. The author also presents a meticulously researched variety of technical equipment. The result is an excellent suspense novel that readers will find most entertaining

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "Deadly'! By TKrauss Ronnie Ingels and Dawson Hughes team up again in Deadly Designs, the sequel to Harmful Intent by Nike Chillemi. This time, international intrigue and religious radicals are part of the mix when the pair is called in to investigate the kidnapping of a seven year old girl. The story has a ‘007’ flavor since they are backed by a wealthy espionage expert. It is definitely a page turner, and although I enjoyed meeting the characters again it is not necessary to read book one in order to make sense of book two. Woven quite expertly into this fast paced murder mystery is the romance between the two that was only hinted at in book one. Here it comes to full bloom. Also much more in the forefront is the faith element. Deputy Hughes rededicates his life to Christ and Ingels makes a first time commitment. However this part of the story is not presented in an ‘in-your-face’ style, but makes sense in the context of the story and does not detract from the main attraction, which is solving the case. Well done, Ms. Chillemi! I am now waiting impatiently for book three!

I had to find out what happened between Dawson and Ronnie. Author Nike Chillemi wrote a great sequel that kept me biting my nails and yelling out a few suggestions at her characters. The action was intense. I won't spoiling the surprises, but be prepared for a couple of nasty villains. The romance between Chillemi's hunky cowboy and the tough yet fragile Ronnie was better than book one - thank you very much!! I'm already looking forward to the next book! :-)

Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). I am a huge fan and found this novel amoung his best, very interesting plot and characters. I highly recommend this and all of Len Deightons work, I am always hoping that new books from this author are forthcoming!

An interesting 'what if... tale' By Mrs S M Fox 'SS-GB' is now over 20 years old, but the story doesn't date, and it's worth reading especially if you've also read Robert Harris's 'Fatherland' as both speculate on a life post-1945, with Britain invaded by Nazis and the Third Reich well established throughout Europe. Good detective stories with unusual settings are rare, and both authors have meticulously researched the period, arriving at a scenario which is chillingly plausible. Deighton has the edge in showing how well the British class system would accommodate the Nazi bureaucracy, and his portrait of collaborators and those forced - by dint of their occupation - to work with the new masters is sensitive, exploring uncomfortable moral questions.

Buffington SS-GB is a gripping, tough, and imaginative novel about our world as it might have been. At the opening of the novel, Great Britain has fallen to the German invaders, its army defeated, its cause lost. The novel centers on Scotland Yard, which is now commanded by a German Police General, who is in a power struggle with Himmler's SS. The main protagonist is Inspector Douglas Archer, Britain's top crime-busting homicide detective. Archer is ambiguous about the Germans, and this ambiguity makes Archer a complex and fascinating character, who gets caught up in plots-within-plots involving German infighting, American plans, and British conflicted hopes for either liberation or a more tolerable existence under the Germans.SS-GB has an amazing gothic feel to it, a distinct nightmarish flavor that is hard to describe. The reader never doubts that this is how things might have been had Hitler gone through with the invasion of Britain. But this is far from a predictable story. No spoilers here, but the ending will rock any reader.This one is one of Deighton's very best novels and no Deighton fan should miss it. RJB.

I said it about Caryl McAdoo's debut "Vow Unbroken" and it goes for book 2, "Hearts Stolen". For me, McAdoo vaulted immediately into the ranks of a seasoned author--another great writer I'll follow closely."HEARTS STOLEN" evokes the slower 19th century pace, but with daily life and death risks. Trail topics include Texas statehood, land deals, rogue red men, outlaws, daily faith, farming and family. I wouldn't want to live then; but 'tis fun readin' 'bout. Book 2 works as a stand-alone, but definitely continues many characters' lives from earlier.Adventure opens with an ambush and abduction by Comanche--enough plot for some author's entire book. Not McAdoo. Here it's just an appetizer to a steady word-buffet of riveting frontier suspense and action, Lone Star style. She even tweaks in ample romance. Good for men and girls--all ages. Through the use of real 1844 territory history, dialects, and visualized settings, Caryl McAdoo takes readers on yet another trek via ox wagon, stagecoach, train, and even steamboat. A pair riding bareback remains PG but allures to the riders' emotional steam. Read how faith of several types guide the era's human struggle.This book 2 continues the very believable character-based life of a family and those that offer them support, as well as those who abuse or try to kill them. I hated saying goodbye and hope to read more about them. Hearts Stolen is a historical Christian fiction book, the second in the series. Vow Unbroken is the first, but you don’t need to read it first in order to enjoy Hearts Stolen. But now that I’ve read Hearts Stolen, I have to go back and read Vow Unbroken just because I’m not ready for the story to end. Be ready to start a story you won’t want to finish.Rosaleen “Sassy” Fogelsong Nightengale’s husband Charles told her not to go visiting her mother. This is in the early 1800s in Texas. She didn’t listen and is kidnapped by Indians. Sassy is a wonderful character. She has smarts, isn’t afraid, and is a very likeable heroine. Her faith in God kept her through her captivity of 5 years, until one day Levi Baylor shows up to rescue her and her child.Charley Nightengale is Sassy’s son born soon after she is captured by the Indians while she was the third wife to Bold Eagle. He is a fun character. After Levi rescues them and they travel back to Texas, Charley’s dialogues and ways of thinking had me laughing. I’d love to see this as a movie. He’d steal the show.Levi Baylor is a Texas Ranger. As he and his fellow Ranger Wallace Lusk transport Sassy and the other women back home, it is fun being along for the ride. You feel like you are really there. Levi and Sassy are great characters together and you are rooting for them to get together, but she is still married to Charles. What will happen when he delivers her home? Will Charles still want her after she’d been the wife of an Indian? How will she now fit into society? A fellow captive, Laura, has her baby after they rescue her. Wallace is enraptured. But is that love strong enough when he finally meets Levi’s cousin Rebecca? Will these two end up together, or will his cousin come between them?What happens with God in the mix? I loved this angle of the story. The hearts of these men are so great, and the love for their women so strong, they’ll go through anything to keep them safe.All the characters have to learn they have their pasts and none of them are perfect. But with God, peace and love reign no matter what you are going through. Peace like one of Sassy’s Granny’s heavy quilts. Now that’s peace! I thoroughly enjoyed this story by Caryl McAdoo and can’t wait to read more. The dialogue is engaging, the characters are unforgettable, the setting and descriptions move the story along without taking away from the story.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Great Texas Historical Romance By Daysong Reflections I thoroughly enjoyed Caryl’s first novel, “Vow Unbroken” so I eagerly accepted her offer of “Hearts Stolen” to review and hoped it would be as good. I was not disappointed. “Hearts Stolen” was every bit as good and even included several characters from the first book. Of course a few of them had grown up a bit. I especially liked catching up with the adult versions of the featured children of “Vow Unbroken”. It took me a bit to make the connection (too many books read in between) but when I did I loved it!Sassy had been a captive and wife of Indian chief Bold Eagle for nearly five years when she was rescued by Texas Rangers. During the long trek back home, she and Levi Baylor fall in love, although she assumes she still has a husband waiting for her return. Both Sassy and Levi fight their attraction and faithfully honor her marriage vows despite temptation to do otherwise. I have to admit that once again the primary characters were upstaged by a child. Sassy’s four-year-old son Charley who is such a hoot!I loved everything about “Hearts Stolen”. The plot engaged me from the very beginning and held my interest until the end. Ample drama, danger, and romance filled its pages along with more than a surprise or two – not all good ones. I admired the integrity of both Sassy and Levi and the fine example they provide for the reader.I look forward to the next installment of this excellent series. I am thinking seriously about purchasing printed copies of each of the books to add to my keeper shelf. Somehow a digital copy just won’t do. Caryl has definitely been added to my growing list of favorite authors.I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

"I Do" was given to me as a gift by the author, a good friend of mine, and since I know Kiersten Hall personally, I can vouch for the fact that this was written truly in her own voice, just as she would describe - in person - the many hilarious, silly, and often downright unbelievable stories she has lived in her videography career! Nobody could make this stuff up. I enjoyed reading about the many venues, mishaps and accomplishments that Ms. Hall has experienced! Many pages had me feeling sorry for her as she lugged heavy equipment around during her pregnancies, some pages had me feeling sorry for the bride and groom, but ALL pages made me glad to have taken the time to read this fun and exciting book! I think this is a wonderful gift for all those newly engaged couples we all know, and the Wedding Directory checklist at the end of the book will prove invaluable to those just setting off on their own tales of marital bliss! This book - "I DO" - should be considered a 'must-have' for everyone's own library!

Review I liked the way the author started his memoir by demonstrating his rotten attitude as a teen and his rebellion against his parents and society by joining the Marines. It is a beginning that will warm the heart of other Marines, as anyone who is related to one will attest. Still, Todd Lentocha struck me from the beginning as an unusual guy, loving boot camp, for instance. While the extent of his tragedy is difficult to read about when the reader considers that this individual laid everything on the line for the safety of society, it is also information that needs to be out there. People will not appreciate what they have unless they know about the sacrifices being made. Ignorance breeds complacency. I appreciated this book from that perspective as well as from a psychological point of view. How Lentocha manages the rest of his life will be as influential to everyone he knows and all who hear of him as how he dealt with criminals as a police officer. Readers are likely to find the writer as interesting as I did. I liked his admission of his bad moods and his depression. I hope he follows this book up with a sequel, and I think other readers will wish the same. My bet is that this high-stakes achiever will find something further to write about. Officer Down, Man Up is aptly titled, well written and formatted. The cover picture is of a mangled car that no living human would be expected to emerge from. While on duty, Todd suffered a horrific injury. His courageous story of rebuilding his mind and body and rediscovering himself is deeply moving and surprisingly funny. Highly recommended.

Todd Lentocha has faced traumatic brain injury and permanent blindness with humor, determination and support from his loved ones. It is interesting to note that Lentocha utilized a voice-recognition computer program to write the account of his struggle, with the editorial aid of Pegi Deitz Shea (a former journalist, publicist, and the author of many children's books). More than just another 'comeback' book about struggling with a disability, "Officer Down, Man Up" is a compelling testament that draws from informative interviews with Lentocha's neurosurgeon, therapists, and fellow police officers, and reflects what can be accomplished even when confronted with the most dire circumstances with the right kind of medical, familial, and social support system. As a side note, with the current national dialogue over police misconduct, "Officer Down, Man Up" will serve to remind us all of the sacrifices our policemen and women make in their efforts to secure our peace and safety. Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, "Officer Down, Man Up" is very highly recommended for personal reading lists, as well as community and academic library collections. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very helpful! By gfisher I am so glad that I bought this book. I was most interested in the last chapters the deal with survival, and moving on. This book is different from others in that it doesn't necessarily promote counseling or methods to stay together. Rather, it explores both options (staying together and breaking up). Then, it talks about how to "survive" regardless or whether or not that person is still in your life--it talks about moving on, taking time to find yourself before starting a new relationship, and, most importantly, about forgiveness. It says forgiveness "is not saying to the other person `it was ok for you to do that to me' but rather `I have survived what you have done to me, and no longer hold anger toward you.'" I think my anger over my previous long-term relationship is one of the things that has kept me from being open and trusting in my new relationship. That anger is so toxic in so many ways! Sometimes it is nice to read it from someone else's perspective, and to be reminded that a cheating spouse is NOT your fault, and it is ok to move on and make a commitment to yourself to live a long, healthy, and full life with a new person who deserves you.

By Gloria Chambliss When I began to suspect infidelity, I found myself frequently engaged in self-talk trying to talk myself out of those gut feelings and convince my own heart that my suspicions were unfounded and wrong. Until I began reading this book I struggled with validating the things I was seeing. To be honest, I think the title drew my attention first because I am not looking at merely proving myself right or wrong. I really just want to survive this crisis in whatever manner is best for myself ultimately because I am only truly responsible for myself in the marriage. There are sections I am not quite ready to read, but the table of contents is detailed enough that I can read the information I need at the moment throughout this nightmare. Right now, I've especially found the author's explanation of appropriate privacy within in a marriage as compared to secrecy within a marriage extremely helpful. I've not heard it described so simple and clear before, but that is what is helping me most at this point. I don't have to see that particulars of what he's hiding from me when the obsession with secrecy itself is so overwhelmingly a problem. I would have wished to never need to read a book such as this, but since I do, this is proving to be a common sense guide through the pain and betrayal of infidelity.

The historical setting and well defined characters made it all the more fascinating. Great read for that "difficult to buy for" male on your gift list.
