The advice is solid and usable. The author ensure the step parent "walks the careful line" of being a parent figure while not trying to replace the parent (that is in one of the chapters). That makes sense. My ex wife's biggest fear is that my wife will try to take over as the mother of her children. My wife would never think of it, but still my ex worries. The advice, like trying to establish a solid working relationship with the biological mother makes sense in most cases would probably alleviate her fears. My ex is rather stubborn and won't accept that, but I know other ex's who would try to accept that olive branch. The book gives other solid advice like ask them questions (so they know you care) but if they don't answer, be patient and don't push it. One of best pieces advice, though it might seem obvious, was to "love them like they are your own" (no trying to replace though). That is important. I enjoyed the book. It gave me some new ideas while reinforcing other things that my wife (put in on her kindle to read) does.

I do a lot of coaching work, so it helps me to read up in areas where I have no actual experience. This book gave me some really good insights about the growing pains, in creating a new family is like… because that is what happens when you become a step-mom. You are working toward a process… of turning what has been a fragmented unit, back into something that is whole. And this may not be easy- if the children still have it in mind that the OLD family-unit is the preferred arrangement. She gives good advice, that ultimately is about building mutual respect, consideration and being able to remain detached from any of the shenanigans… because it isn’t personal—so long as you don’t push and press and try too hard to get acceptance. That seems to be the underlying theme.. and it is spot-on. If you or someone you know is finding their way through the process, navigating a serious relationship that comes with the package-deal… there is some really good advice that will help a lot.

When I first read this book, my whole life flashed in front of my eyes. I love my family, my husband, my step son and my own daughter but there is a tension surrounding me all the time. My step son's mother was starting to interfere in our lives too much which was taking a toll on me physically and emotionally. Me and my husband often argue about this, we used to fight a lot as there was a lack of discipline and respect from both my step son and his mother.I felt really great after reading this book. So many things in this book are relatable to my present situation. I've started talking to my husband to set a time or days for my step son to meet his mother. In this way, it was not effect my own married life. My husband is co-operating as much as he can and everything's normal. I'm feeling much better.
