Book Review By Rex Owens Reviewed by Inkspots ReviewsComplex relationships and human frailties compliment a rich, multilayered cultural, geographical, and political backdrop in Out of Darkness, the second book in Rex Owens' Murphy series, a deeply rewarding and enlightening exploration of tenuous 1990's peace efforts in Ireland.Owens demonstrates a masterful command of Irish political history, which while fictionalized is thickly intertwined with real events, such as the August 1998 bombing in Omagh, Northern Ireland, by the separatist group the Real IRA. The Omagh bomb killed 29 people and injured more than 200 others. As masterly, the author strikes a fine line between simplifying the politics enough to hold the interest of those not intimately familiar with them, while infusing enough to hold the interest of those with a deeper passion and understanding.The author also, masterfully, breaks up the politics and related intrigue via an abundant, continual interjection of personal, cultural and geographic color, most notably heavy regional references to food and drink, particularly distinguishing between northern and southern Irish tastes.Like a first-rate Irish stew, Out of Darkness blends all the ingredients necessary for a great politically-inspired novel steeped in danger and intrigue, while also charting one man's deeply introspective journey toward personal peace.With that perfect mix, the Murphy series just keeps getting better.

A Beautifully Crafted Sequel By Jacob Smith In Rex Owens' second novel, we follow Ian Murphy as he struggles with inner demons that are a result of his past as an important member of the IRA. His role as the author of the Peace Accord does little to keep the darkness at bay, and too many nights find him at the bottom of a whiskey bottle.Ian realizes that he needs to find redemption if he is to live with the mistakes of his past. He embarks on a real and metaphorical journey that leads him to find true love in the Dingle Peninsula. Yet even with this new inspiration, Ian cannot escape the darkness in his heart. He risks his new romance to travel to Belfast, where the fear of violence continues between the Catholics and Protestants. Can Ian convince RIRA hold-outs to turn in their weapons? Can he prevent new peace walls from being built so the world will see that Northern Ireland can govern itself? What will become of his relationship with the love of his life?In his second novel, Rex Owens explores how a man's desire for redemption turns into a path to self-knowledge and self-acceptance. It is definitely a great sequel to Murphy's Troubles.

This book follows the internal turmoil of Ian Murphy as he valiantly works to appeal both factions in the Irish conflict. It follows his thoughts and emotions as he battles both internally and externally with the views and attitudes of both Protestants and Catholics. As the author of the Peace Accord, he is drawn back to Belfast attempting to have both factions come to terms with the agreement. Mixed with the give and take of his own new love, this book takes the reader on a valiant journey into his internal and external conflicts as he tries to find redemption for his past acts. Walls or no walls? The story rivets the reader with wonder, anticipation, and hope for Ian and Mairin. Definitely a five star read
